James Abbott McNeill Whistler, 1834-1903, was an American-born artist during the Gilded Age and the Founder of Tonalism. In Whistler paintings, he advocated simple design and the tonal harmony of the final result. Whistler influenced the art world and the broader culture of his time. He was adept in oil painting, pastels, watercolors, and drawings. In 1940 the artist was commemorated on a US postage stamp. A statue of him was erected in 2005 on Battersea Bridge on the River Thames in UK. In 2010 a Whistler print at auction, Nocturne, was sold for $282,000.
